Han-Ji #1
A pendant lighting that transmits a feeling of softness, phenomenal, and a touch of pleasant ambiance with a warm glow.
Material
Hanji is Korean traditional handmade paper made from the inner bark of mulberry trees known in Korea as “Dak”. Hanji has diverse uses and was an integral part of people’s lives in the past due to its strong waterproofness and high consistency of fibers and cellulose. The Color, texture, and translucency are determined by the types of wood used and distinct manufacturing processes.
Design Story
Taking inspiration from the lantern festival back home, the “Hanji Lighting” collection features paper-made concentric globes that evoke the neutral feeling of the soft glow of light oozing out from the dark. The globe of each pendant is made out of Hanji, a Korean traditional paper that helps to form shimmering light due to its translucency.
Paper-Mache Technique
To fabricate the pendants, balloons are inflated in varied sizes and dipped into the bowl filled with white tacky glue. Once the balloon is ¾ dipped, start placing the Hanji on the surfaces. After the first layer, overlap with different types of Hanji, and twines to create layers organically.
Keep the natural grooves that have been created. When the components are completely dried, pop the balloon and let Hanji breathe to create beautiful organic forms.
Inflatable pendants coiled around with neutral tone-on-tone twines & ropes, 3d printed canopy, and electric components.
